Then another area to look at is her gravid spot (the arrowed area) it will get bigger and blacker than this. The female pictured here has already had several batches of fry so she stays a little larger. Once she has a batch of fry then you can expect them every 28-32 days from then on out. I noticed when I kept platties that the females always looked more "tank like", just absolutely like they are ready to bust. From my experiences, when I place my livebearers in a "birthing net situation" they tend to get stressed and won't give birth. Make sure you tank is well planted...if not the whole tank, at least one corner thickly planted, maybe even a few floating plants. This is for the fry to go and hide in. Also when my females are delivering I notice tht they go to this area and stay close to the gravel. Now to feed them, take your typical tropical fish flakes place some in a ziplock bag, and crush them to a powder. I just rub the bag between my two hands to achieve this. Then continue to fee your fish as normal. The flakes will be smaller so your fry can eat them. And if they have floating plants they will come to the surface and use these plants to hide in while eating. Best of luck...Heidi BBNP attached this image: Last edited by BBNP at 08-Jan-2005 19:40 "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Thomas Carlyle |
