about 3 days ago I watched my male red wag tail platie become paralized and die within a matter of a couple of hours. I've had him and his tank mate (a female) for about 7 months. The tank's cycled and when I tested the water all the parameters were normal except for a very minor ammonia spike.

I've been watching the female and she seems mostly fine although she's hiding in the plastic plant a lot more than she used to.

Also, despite having them for so long in a stable tank I never once had fry. Is it possible that the male was just rather aged when I got him? Or should I be watching for something more sinister do you think?

Anyway, I was about to move them into a bigger tank so I'm a little anxious to figure out if somethings actually wrong or not.

It is very possible that the platy had something genetically wrong with him, or even was already at old age. Pet stores have some rather diasappointing practices at times.

As for your current surviving platy since there have been no obvious signs of disease in the tank I would give her a full ten day quarantine; if you still have no obvious signs of disease she should be fine.

The lack of fry could be the male, the female, or more likely the male and the female eating the fry.

Goodluck,

Koi

I've come to the conclusion that the duo were just coming to the end of their natural lifespans....kinda sad really. The other's become a bit lethargic now too but again absolutely nothing wrong with the water.

Looks like when I set up my 20gal, I'll be starting with new fish.
