I've been pretty much casual with my guppy tank, but now that I've sold some of them I thought I'd ask a few questions of those who breed:

-What temp is your breeding tank set at?
-If you raise the fry in a separate tank, what temp is that water?
-Do you add salt to your breeding tank?
-Do you feed your guppies anything special?

Thanks

I find Guppies do VERY well no matter what, but...

Breeding tank temp- 80 F

I usually keep the fry in seperate tanks- temp about the same- untill I run out of space

I have never added salt to the water

I feed finely crushed flakes, but usually start with liquid food for livebearers.

Umm, it's been a while but I used to breed a lot of guppies. I started out with separate rearing tanks but later I got lazy and just stopped using them, the guppies bred regardless and helped pay for fish foods etc.

So I'll give the specs I had when I was using rearing tanks, the specs in the fry tanks were always almost identical to the breeding tanks anyway:

75-80F
Used some aquarium salt, some magnesium sulfate (very little)
Fed mostly high quality crushed flake, frozen bloodworm, baby brine shrimp, daphnia when I could get it, basically the same as what I feed my other tropicals.

Hi I have many breeder tanks and many fry/juvie tanks. I keep the breeding tanks right at 78-80 F and the fry/juvie tanks at 82 F. I feed them all a mixture of freeze dried blood worms, earthworm flake (said to increase drops), liver flake, beefheart flake, brineshrimp flake, spirulina flake and Hikari micro pellets... I used to feed the frozen but that gets rather expensive on so many tanks...

I keep the fry/juvie tanks at 82 because it increases their metabolism, and I feed them a couple times a day... between those two and doing extra water changes optimizes the growth/color rate. Some would say that this decreases their life span, which is why I cool down the temp a little once they get a little older.

Good luck!

Hi there,
I keep my guppy tank at 80-82F, depending on the temperature outside

I do not raise the fry in a seperate tank, I raise them in the same tank with the adults.

I feed all my fish a variety of foods, and for fry I make sure I crush some of the food small for them.
I feed frozen bloodworms a couple times a week, HBH 8 veggie flake (seems excellent for guppy fry development- they sure love their veggies), spirulina flake, brine shrimp flake, staple flake, shrimp pellets, algae wafers, sinking crumbles, and frozen daphnia - when there are fry in the tank.

I do not believe in adding salt to any tank other than brackish or salt water

I was lucky when I was a kid, no test kits, 14 years old,
had 15 tanks stuffed with breeding guppies in my room LOL.

"What temp is your breeding tank set at" - 78F

"If you raise the fry in a separate tank, what temp is that water?" - same, 78F

"Do you add salt to your breeding tank?" - no

"Do you feed your guppies anything special?" - african cichlid flakes.

"What temp is your breeding tank set at" - I generally have my tank set at 75-ish, but since the temp is up in the house, it's more like 80-85 depending on if the windows are open or the AC is on.

"If you raise the fry in a separate tank, what temp is that water?" - Same tank... no room for more tanks!

"Do you add salt to your breeding tank?" - Nope.

"Do you feed your guppies anything special?" - Heh... wait, I've got a picture of this, lemme find it. Hmm... I'll just make a separate post on how I make baby food.

I forgot.. Baby food is DIFFERENT..

I take leftover flakes, african cichlid flakes, algae wafers, freeze-dried bloodworms, freeze-dried brine shrimp.

Then blend it in a small coffee blender to a powder.

Even the adult fish go nuts..

The guppies are in with the sparkling gouramis in 78F water. When I wanted fry I stuck the male and female of my choice in the 5g unheated tank so about 74F. After they had fry I moved them back to the tank. I finally got a heater for the tank with fry 2weeks later. The first day or 2 I fed them liquifry and then did about the same thing as kitten. I took my various adult foods, tossed them together, and crunched them into powder. They also had bloodworms 1 day in the past week but the trumpet snails mostly cleaned those up cause the fry were too small to do more than pick at 1 bloodworm. I don't even keep aquarium salt around. The rare occasion I find the need for some I borrow a little rock salt from my grandpa who likes to make homemade icecream.
