I've got 1 platy fry that I need to get out of my community tank until he gets bigger. He is currently about 1 1/2 grains of rice in size. I have a 1 gal, and a 10gal that he could go in. Does anybody see any problems with him being alone in a ten gallon? All I can think of is getting sucked up the pump intake, but he is already to big for that.

Can anybody think of any other proplems?

thanks,
-Dennis

i reccomend you putting him in the 1 gallon tank because a 10 gallon is too big for 1 fry and you might have a problem finding him if decides to hide and sometimes its hard for them to swim all the way to the top to get food....i hae 3 platy fry and i have them in a breeders next in my 20gal and the breeders net is smaller that a 1 gallon tank and they are doing JUST fine

My one gallon doesn't have a heater.....and it's cold out....I guess I'll have to use the 10 gal. I can't BELIEVE I didn't think of that! But that's why I posted it after all.

I'm not to worried about him getting to the top, or getting lost, as he is currently living, and eating in a 60gal.

The platy profile says they can endure temperatures from 64°F - 77°F. However they will grow faster in warmer water.

I have 5 platy fry in a 2 gallon without a heater. I know the water has dipped to around 70°F overnight. As an added safeguard, I've been wrapping the tank (it's a 2 gallon hex) in a thick baby blanket. My little guys are thriving.

The fry at that size should be able to stay away from being sucked up the filter.

Beefshank, Why not just get a breeder net and put it in the 60gal as BabyBlueEyes suggest. That way it has heated water, and still can see some fish and won't get too lonely. When you feed it, it won't have to swim all around a big tank to look for its food. Cause to a baby fry a 10gal could look as big as the ocean to it.
Breeder nets are not than expensive. Cheaper than the upkeep of running a 10gal with only 1 fry. I have 2 guppy fry and 8 molly fry in a breeder net in a 3 footer. I sprinkle food in that net, and later on remove any excess food.

If you really wanted to put the fry in a 10 gallon you could always get a tank divider so it would only have half the tank. Also you could put the fry on the side w/o the fitler, so it will not get sucked into the intake, but the filtration will still go all around the tank.
