I've read a lot on the subject...yes, they need salt; no they don't; it's not necessary but beneficial, etc. I have a trio of lyretails in their own tank that I currently add salt to but I'd like to add some to my larger livebearer tank and just want to do what's best for the fish ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

I've noticed that these fish don't live long and aren't particularly hardy, but a small amount of salt seems to help, maybe a tablespoon per ten gallons. They don't live in very salty water (compared to other livebearers), so easy does it. |

My jaw almost dropped the first time I saw a molly swimming past a sea anemone! One of the LFS here actually acclimate them over, and then let people setting up new SW aquariums take them for free to get their tanks going, and then bring them back when they are done. Knowing that, and the fact that they are brackish fish, I would opt for adding salt to the water, and not worry about overdoing it. |
