I was window shopping at Aquabid yesterday and someone was auctioning mollies saying they were good algea eaters. Any truth to that?

Mollies are pretty good with green algae. They might not wipe it out of your tank completely, but will help.

IME, they are less interested in brown algae.

i like mollies as algae eaters compared to plecos becuase imo they are prettier and more active. Also, there are many color varieties and not as expensive. When i had mollies they did an awesome job at taking care of any green algae that grew on the sides of the tank. Also with mollies you do not need to worry about tank size as much. They will do fine in a tank around 20 gallons, but a pleco will need a huge tank since they grow quickly.

Well, my mollies like algae, and eat a lot of it. Petey, my striped rubbernose pleco, does a great job on the glass and rocks but leaves the plants alone. Thats where the mollies take over, they like the stuff on the plants and filter tube. great little fish.

Thanks all. When I saw the information it was one of those things that sounded too good to be true. I appreciate all the information.
