Megil TelZeke Fish Addict Posts: 863 Kudos: 890 Votes: 393 Registered: 21-Jul-2003 | I agree with guppy girl on this, If the platy is old, it is possible that she has run out of follicles to produce eggs with, and has entered menopause. Unlike males(which can produce sperm throughout their entire mature lifes), females are born with all the eggs they will have, the are incapable of producing new eggs when their stock runs out. while there may be a lot of premature eggs in the female guppy, it is possible that she can expend them all during her lifetime. Other possibilities are circumstantial, if there is a stress in the system, or there is a deficiency in her diet, the body might shut down ova development. When this happens no mature eggs are produced to be fertilized. I am basing my facts on mammalian reproduction to an extent, but I do believe it applies to most vertebrates, including fish. I apologize ahead of time if I made a faulty conclusion, and would gladly learn the reproductive style of livebearer's, for future reference. HTH, Megil. |
