when i think my platys/mollies r going to give birth, i feed the fish, so that she comes to the surface, then i quickly snatch her. (with the net) This my sound cruel, but it would be less stressful than chasing her around the aquarium.

My platys and mollies usally give birth at night, as not to attract attention to the other fish. i can guess when she is going to give birth because for the the day before labour, she is extra fat, and lies on the bottom of the tank. (i check that she isn't already giving birth and the answer is regualy "no" !!!!)

:88)as i observed, the reason why platy or other fish goes up and down it's because of the reflection they see... they think that there's still free space to swim for. that is in the aquarium only. now try to put them in another place without any reflection they will stay put. observe!!!
...but for now, do not even think of moving her, move the other fish instead... for you are only stressing her!

Yes its more than possible for your fry to have fry....weird i know but true.

Hope you have more luck finding your fry than I did. While doing a good clean out and a bit of gardening in the tank I found nothing at all.......

Only a month or less to go and im sure there will be more along

I have 2 platy "fry" that were born in my 30 gal. They're now about 1 inch long. I moved them into my 10 gal where they reside with an oto. There were 2 platy fry I could see last night. I couldn't believe it, I thought "How can my fry, be having fry ?" Is it possible for 1 inch long platys (to me they're still babies) to be mating already ?

The fry were nowhere to be seen today, they're hiding in the gravel or plants, or eaten (hopefully not).

I have 4 platy - 1m 3f.

one female has given birth and i managed to save 1 fry - my first and im so proud !!!
I missed her giving birth but didnt see any obvious signs that she was about to.

Now one of the other females looks like shes about to pop so im guessing she cant be far off. She has started to swim up and down vertically at the side of the tank. She does this for a while and then stops for a bit and then does it again.

Was just wondering if shes in labour and is this usual behaviour??

Platy fry are excellent at hiding. Look really close at the gravel and around the bases of plants. You might just find something the "evil" danios missed.

Well looks like I have missed the drop - and no fry to be seen....

I'm gunna blame my evil danios ]:| as they have killed 2 neons latley so they can have the blame for lack of fry as well....seems fare to me.

Still on the bright side I have 1 fry safe in his own tank doing very well..

I find you have to "sneak up" on them and catch them in the first swoop or forget it without a fight. No matter how fat they are and how much they seem to have to waddle to get around the tank, they sure can motor when they want to - It's definitely best to leave her rather than stress her out so long as she's not being harassed by the other fish. Good luck !!

dreamweaver8891 - I've heard it's hard to witness the drop but I've been lucky enough to catch it 3 times since I started this hobby 7 months ago. But then again, I don't sleep much (3 - 4 hours a night).

Thanks - will keep an extra eye on her then.

have tried separating her but just cant catch her. She hids in the plants just to well. I would pull everything out to get but but thought it best to leave her and get the fry rather than stress her out completley.

thanks again.

I really envy you Meg's Mom.... Although my platys have given birth (as is evident by my nursery tank!) I have yet to actually see the birthing process! It seems my fish prefer giving birth at night... Because we've only spotted fry in the morning!!!!! Still... I have a chance as my females platys seem to be pregnant most of the time! Here's hoping!

The first time my first platy gave birth, that is exactly what she did... up and down the side of the tank then she would stop for a while then right back at it. I went over to see what the heck she was doing and she dropped 2 fry right in front of me. That was so awesome !! So look closely underneath her when she stops the up and down motion... you might just see her drop the fry. Also, you might consider separating her now if you want to save any of the fry. Good luck !
