i'm thinking about breading agine, i love guppies but i have an issue with space as i alredy have a few tanks!
my plan was to get two 2.5gal tanks, one for adults and one for fry(i wont have any problem with over crowding of fry as i have some hungry oscars who will help me with that), is this a stupid plan and should i just go for a larger tank? also, i'd like to start with some very nice guppies, the problem is i live in Canada, the far east cost of canada...so mostt mail orders cant come this far, but i'd really like to have pure strain...any tips?

Brent may have all kinds of guppies in Ontario:

I live in Texas. I think you will end up with about six tanks per strain.

I know you said space is an issue. However, I dont think you can breed guppies in 2.5g tanks. I would really not go for anything less than a 5g for a trio, and a 10 for 2 trios. Fry would be OK in a 2.5g tank for awhile, but not for too long.
Guppy fry need space to swim as they grow, or they develop with deformities and the like. You would probably end up culling twice as many fry in a 2.5 as you would in a 10g.
I breed my guppies, adults in a 25g tank, babies in a 10g "nursery tank".
In all reality, if you consider that a 10g is 20 inches long, a 5g is 16, and a 2.5 is 12, I would say try to find those extra 8 inches of space. You wont regret it. Again, you could also go for a 20g tank, and put a divider in the middle. Pop the most pregnant mom in the "nursery" side, and when she has had her babies return her. This may maximize small space even better for you, and only require 1 tank to maintain, rather than 2.
Heres another site in Canada that has very reasonable prices on show guppies, and does ship pretty much anywhere in canada, and I think the US too.

I agree 2.5 gallons is small for breeders. Fry do better in the summer outside in 10 or 18 gallon tupperware tubs, with shade and lots of air for cooling on the gulf coast. In the winter 2.5 gallons is ok for 30 fry for as much as two months. It is a good thing to cull heavy for size at a young age. I understand it is hard to throw anything away, but I get tired of wading through all this junk to find what I want.
