Hey ya'll
Not sure if this should be in the hospital forum or not, I was checkin out my male guppy this morning and there is a huge split in his tail, almost to the base. It doesnt look anything like fin rot, and there is nothing in the tank that would attack him. Is it possible he ripped it on something? I have started treating with mela fix but what the heck? Any ideas?

Sam

That's pretty common with male guppies; a little fighting between them, rubbing against a rock or a plastic plant, just making a sharp turn - these can all cause tears. It'll heal on its own, but if you really want to medicate Melafix was the right choice.

Mela fix is the right choice. If it looks like a split (aka, theres nothing missing, its just torn) then he'll be fine. This happens to male guppies all the time. Its nothing too serious.

Again, seconds on the melafix if anything.

I totally agree with the previous 2 posts. It would be wise choice to consider melafix, but if not make sure you observe that guppy a bit more until it's cut is healed, because it could lead to an infection with nasty results

I had the same thing happen to one of my bettas... I couldn't figure out HOW he'd split his tail from tip to nearly the base (cloth plants, etc). However, melafix healed him right up, and I'm sure he had a lot more tail to heal that your guppy... he should be just fine. I was also amazed at how quickly it healed. You should see great progress in a week or so!

WAtch for filter intake too when he swims near it. Is it grabbing that delicate fin?

I agree on Melafix or Pimafix as soon as any potential injury is seen in order to prevent infection.
