| niggit Fish Addict Posts: 631 Kudos: 282 Votes: 0 Registered: 29-Jan-2003 | i was thinking that i would enjoy breeding livebearers again and i have an empty 10G i was planning to use. i'm trying to decide between platties and guppies; which would you suggest? i know you should keep a ratio of 3 females to 1 male... so should i have 4 fish in the tank, or could i put 8? or, should i have 2 males and 4 females, etc... what do you find is the best way to maximize fry survival? any other tips would be great! thanks |

You can have more but if you want mor babies to live limit the number. I would also add a couple of ghost shrimp as clean up crew. I would also go with heavily planted fake or live. To make sure most of the babies survive. |

I know my lfs much prefers taking platys than guppies.... I suppose it would all depend on what you plan with the fry..... To thine own self be true... |

To maximize fry survival add a lot of plants and definately include java moss. Feed the fry crushed up flake food. Just poor some food into a plastic zip-lock back and crush it up in there. Man those boogers are going to be hard to catch when you take them to your LFS. |

But it's the difference between "live-bearing toothcarps" and "egg-laying toothcarps," so, pretty close! -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

Around here blues and calicos are less common; check around to see what's stocked at lfs in your area. You could also try for plume Even with heavy planting a 10g is a bit small and you may end up losing fry. A small fry tank is another idea, just depends on how serious you are about breeding & selling. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Or you could have 4 platies with 1 male and 3 females. *Just remember to feed your adults generously (2-4 times a day) so they wont feel as tempted to eat the fry.
