i was thinking that i would enjoy breeding livebearers again and i have an empty 10G i was planning to use.
i'm trying to decide between platties and guppies; which would you suggest? i know you should keep a ratio of 3 females to 1 male... so should i have 4 fish in the tank, or could i put 8? or, should i have 2 males and 4 females, etc...

what do you find is the best way to maximize fry survival?

any other tips would be great!

thanks

I would go with guppies any kind that strikes your desire. I would go with 1 male and 2 females. You can have more but if you want mor babies to live limit the number. I would also add a couple of ghost shrimp as clean up crew. I would also go with heavily planted fake or live. To make sure most of the babies survive.

My vote is for platys... Guppies are very prolific - but I've discovered sometimes hard to get rid of.... I know my lfs much prefers taking platys than guppies.... I suppose it would all depend on what you plan with the fry.....

That is true most lfs take platys mollies or just any livebearer of guppies. So i will also change my vote. I would go for balloon mollies. They are cool looking.

Platies...mickey mouse are cool. To maximize fry survival add a lot of plants and definately include java moss. Feed the fry crushed up flake food. Just poor some food into a plastic zip-lock back and crush it up in there. Man those boogers are going to be hard to catch when you take them to your LFS.

I'm going to try some female platties and a male sword and see what happens. I heard they will breed and you'll get a different color swordtail.

why not breed a livebearer that is rare? like goodieds and stuff like that? it'll be really original and they're so cool to watch. just a thought.

that's a good idea to breed something unusual... i hand't really considered that. however, i've never really come across anything different, other than maybe american flag fish (they're livebearers, right?). but i don't really like them.

i think i'll go with platties. if i was planning to move the fry into a nursery tank after they were born, how many parents could i maintain in a 10G? and in what ratio?

American Flag Fish (Jordanella floridae) aren't actually livebearers, they're killifish. But it's the difference between "live-bearing toothcarps" and "egg-laying toothcarps," so, pretty close!

Platies are a good choice I'd try to go for some color variations that aren't seen at every lfs. Around here blues and calicos are less common; check around to see what's stocked at lfs in your area. You could also try for plumetail or hi-fin platies.

Even with heavy planting a 10g is a bit small and you may end up losing fry. A small fry tank is another idea, just depends on how serious you are about breeding & selling.

I'd go 3 platies with 1 male and 2 females.(this is what I did and almost all fry survived with plant cover.) Or you could have 4 platies with 1 male and 3 females.

*Just remember to feed your adults generously (2-4 times a day) so they wont feel as tempted to eat the fry.
