which one should i get. i want to get a small fish for a 3 gallon bowl. also if i moved them to a 10 gallon tank and i get sword tails and platy will they cross breed.

Neither one would be a good choice for a three gallon. Firstly, they'll both get too large. Secondly, they are each very active fish, so that at least twenty gallons would be preferable.

But yeah, platies and swordtails can interbreed. They're in the same genus, and are very similar fish.

Platys by themselves are far too large for even a 10g tank.
Swordtails get even larger than platys! The necessary tank required for a platy is mimimum 15g long, and minimum for a sword would be 20- but I wouldnt go less than 25 long for a 4-5 inch fish.
In a 3g tank you could choose one of the following:
Pygmy Rasbora of some type
Pencilfish pair would be good
Threadin Rainbows
Killifish Pair
Thats about it.

I would agree, go for the betta, it will love the three gallon tank, and he will feel comfortable, unlike any livebearer.
