Tanya81 Fish Addict Posts: 633 Kudos: 419 Votes: 37 Registered: 27-Jun-2003 | I would go with sailfin mollies over gouramies, as the gouramies are from the same area as bettas and can sometimes pose a threat... mollies are going to be a better choice i think. Also what size tank is this going to be in? 72 gallon bowfront:Tanganyikan Lake set up 75 gallon: A. Baenschi trio,Cyanotilapia Afra Cobwe(4), copadichromis trewavase, protomelas sp. tangerine tiger(breeding pair) |

So_Very_Sneaky Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3238 Kudos: 2272 Votes: 201 Registered: 10-Mar-2004 | the answer to this question can only be what size is the tank? Sailfin Mollies get very large (4-5 inches), and are really not suited to any tank less than 36" long, or around 30 gallons long. Dwarf Gouramis however can be kept in much smaller tanks, such as 10, and 15 gallons. It is possible that a female betta and a gourami might fight though, as they are closely related. There are many other fish that are suited to living with female bettas, if we know your tank size we could better help you! LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | funnyfish, Just a word of caution: Even if they are called Dwarf Gouramies (Colisa lalia), they still get to be over 2” long. How many are you planning to get? I seriously doubt that a 10G is big enough to house more then 2 by themselves comfortably (without having them fight for supremacy), not to mention in competition for surface space with a betta. And even that might be pushing the limits. I would suggest you read up on these fish and their environment before you go to the store and buy them. Hope this helps, Ingo |

dogmai333 Hobbyist Posts: 90 Kudos: 79 Votes: 19 Registered: 03-Feb-2005 | from my experience, mollies nipped the fins off of my female betta. so i wouldnt get them. and i tried to keep female bettas together and they ripped each other to shreds, so if the gouramis and bettas are closely related then i wouldnt chance that either. but then again you never know. Two Tanks Big Fish Posts: 449 Kudos: 328 Votes: 13 Registered: 02-Jun-2003 | I tryed to keep a female betta and male dwarf gourami together once. It worked for about a week, then the gourami starting chasing the betta and took a big chunk out of her tail fin. She was pretty small, but if she had been full grown, there would have been a fight between who really owned the tank. He got along with the small tetras that were in the tank - still does, just not the betta. I have them in a ten gallon and he is fine with the glowlights and head and tail lights. The betta had to be moved to another tank. I also tryed to keep two female bettas together in a ten and that did not work either. |
