Do guppies differentiate between different colors and color patterns in other guppies?

I have basically two different groups...M & F blue metallics, a M orange mutt, and some of the plainer colored females with brightly colored tails. But that's my point, they tend to stay in these groups by color and ignore each other. I added the brightly colored wild guppy M I got yesterday and he's been with those fish ever since.

Is this common or do I have some really odd fish? :%)

I don't know much about guppies... but an ecology professor of mine once mentioned that plain coloured females tend to prefer males with red tails (or colours similar to red) over those with other colours such as blue or yellow... and brightly coloured guppies prefer groups of the same colour. any one else heard this? it might explain the blue metallic/orange grouping...

Hey Theresa!

I also have two different types of guppies in the same tank. (2 types of females in one tank, and the same 2 types of males in another).

The females don't seem to care although you can't tell much of a difference between them unless you really really know what you are looking for.

The males in the other tank do exactly what you spoke of above. I have two yellow lace snakeskin which stay together constantly and the others (half black orange snakeskin) leave them alone but stay together as well.

....so I am guessing that apparently they can differentiate.
