Cut and paste this link http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/photos/gallery.asp?id=swordtails_profile
the top left is a male the top second from left is a female. The male has an anal fin that has a defined point where the female's is more of a triangle.

you cant tell when their young, at least everybody i know hasnt been able to.

the only way to notice is a few weeks down the road when they start grow larger, then you'll notice the sword on the males tail growing in, or in this case, out.

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction

Sometimes it can take quite awhile for the tail to appear (a few months or more).

i would say, to grow them out together for now, the only real reason for seperating the sexes would be for show fish, which i doubt they are.

Depending on the species, it could take up to 9 months to see the sword on the tail start to grow. Usually the common varieties they grow in a few months. The only way to sex them before that time, is when the males get their gonopodium, or sex organ. The anal fin will actually have what looks like a separated fin ray in the front part of the anal fin, or what appears to be a long pointed stick. The females will not have these, and as stated above, their anal fins will be more rounded.
