I used to always buy blue legs crabs and they would eat about 10 snails a week and i dont want to go though that again so is there a crab that wont eat snails?

I was told Scarlet Hermit Crab wouldnt eat them and also Zebra Hermit Crab, But i was also told that neither would eat alage either???

So i am lost on the crab thing lol What do you all got to say about each crab? Thanks

Might be the snails your buying.Turbos and the like fall over frequently and if not rescued by you become lunch.I have had great results with Banded Trochus snails. They are even reproducing now!

I was under the impression that Hermit Crabs would not eat snails unless there was a shortage of empty shells for them to exchange into. Did you have spare shells within your tank for the Hermit Crabs?

My hermit crabs kill snails all the time, regardless of shells. In fact I've had a recent killing spree by my hermit crabs. They are killing snails MUCH smaller than them, so no way it could be for the shells.

I've eliminated two hermit crabs in the last 3 or so days.

Actually the zebras are considered to be the best at eating algea. And all three will eat it.

As for the snails, this is not normal behavior for the hermies to eat them as you described. They are however operunistic creatures, and if not getting enough other foods they need, they may be hungry.

I'm curious, if Turbos fall over so frequently and get eaten/die, how the heck do they survive in the wild, with no one there to "rescue" them? I'm not being sarcastic, it just seems like they ought to have the ability to right themselves when they've fallen or something...and it can't be just by breeding in large numbers, that just doesn't wash.

In the wild, the don't live on rocky areas, as much as they live on the more sandy areas. Thus, they don't climb much and fall over, as they stay on the sand. In your tank, there is not enough food for them down there, so they have to go to wherever they can find food. They prefer the flat surface of the sand, or your glass, but can't get a good grip on LR sometimes, so over they go.

Makes sense, it still just seems that they ought to have the ability to right themselves when they take a tumble.
