Gang,

I recently ordered some stuff for my new tank from Big Al’s. I could not find the Coralife Double Power Center on their site. This is a timer device that has 3 separate power options (4 if you count permanent power as well), one for daytime, one for additional daytime, and one for nighttime.

It seemed to be the perfect solution for a 3 way tank light where I could start half the bulbs in the morning, add the other half later, then turn off that half earlier before turning off the second half, and at that point turn on the lunar lights.

Well, before I went ahead and ordered it at another online vendor site, I decided to go to my LFS to see if they have it there, figuring that it would not be more expensive than shipping.

Oh what a surprise – They used to have it but don’t carry it anymore as most units were defect. I asked what the problem was and they explained that the 3-way system didn’t function, either the power didn’t come on or didn’t go off as targeted.

- Do you have any experience with the Coralife Double Power Center (in pic on right)?
- If not, how about the Coralife Single Power Center (in pic on left)?
- Any other great idea of how to get the “staged” power for the scenario listed above?

Thank you so much,

Ingo

Around here, they have come and gone. As there were several defective ones, as you have stated, and the expense was far higher than just getting 3 separate timers to do the same thing. I think the defect was that many people were over powering the strip, with multiple MH and other lighting, that at some time was all on at the same time. Again, this suggested 3 different timer setups separate from each other. 1 cheap one for the moonlights, 1 cheap one for the early morning and late evening lights, and a high wattage one for the MH, or multiple MH lights.

You can always set your moonlighting to come on a little before the other lights go out, and to stay on for a little while after the others have come on.

NOTE
I moved this to the Marine sections, as this is where this type of device was originally designed for, and you will get more answers probably.

Thanks ACIDRAIN,

I have to say I am a little scared, over here on the dark side

But I believe the people in this section wouldn't hurt a Freshwater guy ...

... Or would they

Thanks again,

Ingo

We might nah, we wouldnt do that

I agree with what Acid said. I know there were a lot of people here that bought them when they came out and are now using just standard home depot heavy duty timers on power strips.

i just use heavy duty timers like dark said, i have one that i can plug the actual power strip into, with a ground plug, then basic ones that have only two gs for things like standard lights. works well, and isn't expensive.
