The town water I have at my house is not the best and is often full of rust so I've always avoided using it with my small tanks. When it's time to do water changes I go to the store and purchase Spring Water. However, now that I'm starting to purchase more and bigger tanks the trips to the store and the expense involved are getting to be too much. So I'm looking into purchasing a RO/DI system to clean my tap water.

I'm not exactly sure what to look for when making a purchase. I have a catalog that features a five stage SpectraPlus 2000 System (90 GPD), but I'm not sure if this is a wise purchase.

Does anyone have a brand/system that they would recommend or one that I should avoid?

You might want to check your lfs or grocery store. I get mine at the grocery store for $0.39/gallon.

I've already done that. No place around me sells RO/DI water which is why I was using Spring Water. Getting tired of lugging home 15+ gallons of water a week and certainly don't want to do this in the winter.

I definately want to make my own water.

I have read that using RO/DI is more of a personal preferance unless you have poor source of tap water. Just exactly how bad is your tap water?
I also have considered buying an RO/DI system for my tank. I found one at an lfs for about $199 that is small, but pumps enough.
Maybe one of my biggest points to make is that it wouldn't be a bad investment if your budget can support it. RO/DI water is the best quality of water you can put in your marine tank. And everyone knows how important water quality is. I would suggest buying it.
I'm not sure good of quality spring water is, but if your budget can't support it like mine, your going to have to suffer and muscle it out. Good luck.

Its really not a matter of how good your tap water is, its a matter of how long your inverts, and fish are going to tolerate the heavy metals and minerals found in every tap water source. Every time you do a water change with tap water you are adding more and more metals and minerals. RO and RO/DI units take the guess work (and the heavy metals and minerals) out of the equation and lets your salt mix add the minerals/metals that are needed.

Forgot to mention....any ro or ro/di unit made by SpectraPure is good, as well as units made by Air, Water, and Ice.
