Setting up 20 gal reef! | |

The only problem I can see with putting them in there is that is where all your detrius will end up collecting....laminar water flow instead of random/chaotic, and of course the lighting. With the lower light they will have a harder time adjusting to the higher light of the main display when you move the frags there, or sell them.....they will also most likely lose color and mass produce zooxanthellae because of the nutrients, lower light, and will branch strange because of the laminar water flow. |

One can always use wedding veil to shade them when ya move them into higher light, right? So that wouldn't be much of a problem... I could probably just rotate/move them around every few days/weeks to keep them from branching weird... I dunno. Or maybe I could just keep them there for a little while and then sell them after a few weeks? I dunno... Thanks |

There's one place that will drill, but only up to 1/2" holes in their own sheet glass that they sell you--they won't drill anything that's not theirs for insurance reasons. I guess that makes sense, but it's still stupid! So I went drillbit shopping--no place in town sells over 1/2" glass bits. The only place that did sell 1/2" bits only sold carbide tipped bits, not diamond tipped. So I ended up getting a 1/2" carbide tipped bit The new plan is to drill 2 holes and have 2 bulkheads and 2 lines that go into the sump. I know 21/2" holes have less area than 11" if you do the math, but I think it'll be enough. I've still gotta do some calculations and stuff and see if it'll be enough... if not, I can always drill 3 holes... I did a bit of test-drilling on some extra glass that Daka had at his place last night, and it didn't work out too well. I cracked like 4 pieces of glass accidentally So I guess I'll have to do some research on techniques and stuff. Appearently I'm just supposed to use no more pressure than what the drill puts on the glass by it's own weight (read: can't push AT ALL)... Methinks I'm going to put a 2x4 standing on end inside the tank (which will be laying sideways) and drill like that. That way, any pressure/weight will go onto the 2x4, not to the entire side panel of the tank... hopefully it won't crack Any thoughts/comments/tips/techniques would be appreciated |

So unfortunately I don't have any tips or secrets. I'd try to get one of those diamond bits online or something, I've heard that's the way to go. You could probably get the size you wanted as well. The supports might help, make sure to keep the tip wet. The heat will crack the glass. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |
