Silinity for a reef? | |
GuessWho Hobbyist Posts: 149 Votes: 0 Registered: 16-Sep-2003 | I spoke to a guy at my lfs, and he has a 2000l reef setup with a couple of fish in it. He told me one of his friends advised him to run his reef tank at 1.026, and he has done so with great results on his corals. Is this not a bit high? He also told me that high Ph 8.4+ can result in a quick up flair of ammonia, is this quite accurate? |

There are alot of people that keep SPS that have their salinity at 1.026-1.027, myself included (1.027). The average salinity of all the worlds reefs is 1.026 (there are some places where the salinity is as high as 1.030-1.032), with the average temp being 82 (which is also the temp I keep my tank at). For most reef tanks, a salinity of 1.025 will be sufficient. [span class="edited"][Edited by DarkRealm Overlord 2004-07-16 02:12][/span] |

GuessWho Hobbyist Posts: 149 Votes: 0 Registered: 16-Sep-2003 | That seems to be over the guideline of what is provided on the Reef keeper FAQ, that's why I am asking. So if I keep my mini reef setup at 1.025 and at 80F (26.5C) it should be fine for corals and fish? Do you guys know where I can get hold of all the abbreviations again, I know it was here somewhere but I can't find it again. Thanks alot for all the help. |

If you might miss a few top-offs, I would go with a specific gravity of around 1.024. It will buy you some time for top-offs without having your tank jumping up in the 1.030 range. -Justin |
