Okay, I got some of the stuff last night, before I got a chance to read the new posts. I got an Aqua Clear HOB Power Filter, and crushed coral substrate. How many inches should the substrate be? Right now it's like 3-4" but I can always take some out. Is a topoff just adding some new freshwater or do I do the 10% s.w. change? Anything else I should do to maintain the tank w/ the clownfish and neon goby? Thanks for your posts!

Heck though from where you are at $40-50 in lights would be all yyou would need if you ever wanted to make a reef. Also you may want to consider a H.O.B. Refugium with like an AC 500. I don't know just seems like it would help. On a tank that size make sure you keep up on top-offs, and maybe make them daily because a little water change is a lot of specific gravity change ina tank that small.

I'd get live sand as a substrate. It's nearly instant cycling

Definately get some small inverts such as a snail of some sort (possilbly a turbo snail or something?), a cleaner shrimp or 2, maybe a fan crab

Definately use a powerhead...the more current, the better.

Good luck

carbon is alright. i would go with sand as it is more natural and still easy to clean. with a small grain size it it's nearly impossible for stuff to get trapped and cause ammonia to build up.
