any suggestions for getting rid of water stains on the outside of the tank?

Pure and Simple,Vinegar. Just plain old white vinegar on a rag works great! Its relatively harmless to fish as well.
I have massive calcium deposits on my tank and vinegar takes care of em.

Spray windex on a paper towel away from the tank. Won't be a problem.

I found windex didnt remove the water stains from my tanks. Too much calcium in the water here for it to do the job. You could try windex, but I just found it was a no go.
Mind you my water is hardness of over 300ppm, so maybe that has something to do with it
