I recently started a 50 gallon saltwater aquarium. It is going to be a fish only, with live rock. I rinsed the crushed coral substrate and figured it was almost perfectly clean, when i started to add water, the water became really cloudy, is this normal? Any help would be great, this is my first lsaltwater aquarium and am just starting to get my feet wet.

thanks

john

Completely normal One way to keep the cloudy water down is to add your substrate and cover it with new/clean trash bags. Once you do that, use a bowl and set it on top of the bags....pour your water into the bowl and let it overflow onto the bags. It will still cloud, but not bad at all.

If you run your filter (if you are using one or have a spare HOB filter) with some filter wool in it, it should clear the water up pretty fast.

ok, after doing all that, the water cleared up, but when the substrate is stirred up. The water gets really cloudy. IS there a way to remove the particles to gurantee the absence of the cloudy water? Any help would be great. thanks

You have to rinse crushed coral like there's no tomorrow...it constantly will give the water that milky color until you rinse and filter it to death. Give it some time...are you running an HOB?

And the trick with adding water to substrate that DRO posted works really well...mine was working fine unti I decided halfway through filling that I didn't have enough sand in my tank...so I added another 50 pound bag and screwed it up. LOL

Once you get bacteria going in the tank and established, they will "glue" the dust down so it doesnt cloud up the tank. The dust is good for the tank

When i added my live rock my tank settled down a LOT in terms of loose particles...

but...lots of silt got stuck in my skimmer and caused me some mechanical issues >.< therefore I recommend rinsing and filtering a little bit...
