Rabbit, you will only need one pump, and that is for the water from the sump to the tank. The water going through the overflow to the sump will be basically gravity fed. Just make sure that the overflow has a higher gph rating than the pump, as that is the best way of ensuring not to pump dry your sump. When the gph of the overflow is higher than the pump, it will only allow the gph flow as what the pump is putting out. Remember, just because an overflow is rated at so-many gph, doesn't mean that is what is flowing through it. The flow rate will be determined by the pump drawing water from the sump back up to the tank. The overflow is merely replacing the water being displaced from the sump.

Of course if you want to run a skimmer in the sump, then you might want to have another pump just for that.

Here is a link to a simple sump:

Just remember that this a basic one, you can juice it up by adding a skimmer, more partitions, live rock, plants, etc...

Rabbit, I tried a DIY overflow but went to a CPR overflow. They are quiet and work well. You might try thier web site and see if they make one that suits your needs. If I remember your tank isn't very large so you will not need a vey large pump.I had fun setting my refugium up,hope you do to!
