Large juveniles or adults Clown Triggers are more suitable for beginners than "tiny" ones...

with such good size tank, and only 1 fish it will definitely be ok

The only problem being is, after you add that clown trigger, you will never be able to add anything with it. As it will most likely kill anything you add to "his" tank, once he has established it as his territory.

What about a Panther Grouper? They get about as big as a clown trigger, and they're pretty. That might work for him.

Panther groupers get three times the size of the clown trigger.

The problem lies with the aggressiveness of the clown trigger and its territory, which is usually the whole tank! Most clown triggers will kill any new addition to the tank, once they have claimed territory to it. They are highly known for this.

ACIDRAIN, I think he only wants ONE large fish with lots of personailty so he won't be adding more fish. Therefore a Clown Triggerfish wouldn't be a problem. If you don't want a Clown Triggerfish you could get a couple of Volitans Lionfish, Moray Eel, or a Grouper. All of these fish get large, have lots of perosnality, and are considered beginners fish.

The clown trigger is very hardy and yes would ge good for a beginner.

But, as the tank is a 200 gal, there is room for more fish. And, as a beginner, in the end, will likely want to add more fish down the road. This is why I posted about not being able to add any fish.

What about a pink tail trigger? The only thing you really have to worry about there would be shrimp, but a clown trigger would eat them also. Plus in a tank that size you could keep some mushroom or zoanthids and trigger should not bother them much. My LFS put one in their reef display, I thought they were nuts until I read up on the fish.
