@$&^$%&#*^#$%!@#@%*&$^ I woke up this morning to find the stuff covering ALL my foreground plants. Do I just keep the nitrAtes up to rid my tank of this blue green menace? Other suggestions?

I don't know if elevated nitrate levels will eliminate this stuff once it has established itself. Some people have had success by increasing the cleaning schedule and manually removing the bga, you can also black out the tank for a period of days (4 days?) which is supposed to kill it off. I used antibiotics at 1/2 recommended dosage to get rid of the bga in my tank.

You can remove as much as possible manually then keep nitrates up. If that doesn't work, you can try manually removing as much as possible and then blacking out the tank for a week, but that rarely works. If all else fails you can go to the last-resort, Ethro-whatever-it's-called but do so at full strength for the full length of treatment - doing less or for a shorter period just helps create antibiotic-resistant strains, and if it comes back you may not be able to get rid of it.

Here is a link to the cyano.shtml" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Skeptical Aquarist's page on cyobacteria.

Dead cynobacteria is poisenous. With whatever method you use to remove it, make sure you remove the dead stuff with water changes or siphoning.

ooo nice link HazyWater !

I've got the stuff (]:|) in my 20 now....and the home tank is one place I really don't want to have to deal with it (and the smell ]
I use nitrAtes and increased water circulation with a powerhead.

I have some in my 29 now on the rock caves and on my anubias darnit !

I'm considering doing a tank and substrate switch but I would still have some on a couple plants, can I try to gently brush it off the plants or would this damage the plants membrane ?

Let me rant about how my evening went:

I went to brush the BGA of my dwarf sags, until I realized that it was nearly impossibly to do so without ripping off and/or tearing leaves. Basically, by the time I finshed cleaning the BGA off of my entire stock, there was about 75% of the foliage that I had prior to the cleaning remaining. #!$ %@#%@$#%@#

BGK, unfortunatly 1 hour a day is no where near the ammount of light that aquatic plants need. While blackouts may work for the short term it is not an answer for a planted tank. Without addressing the root cause of the problem (often a nitrAte issue) there is no hope of staying on top of the stuff.
Cup_of_Lifenoodles, I feel for you ....nothing like trying to remove smelly green boogers from your plants, I'd have to say hornwort was the worst to try and remove it from....in the end I ended up tossing most of it, it was probably the cause of the cyno to begin with. .
