I just bought myself a 12 gallon nano tank with 48 watts of lighting (4wpg) It's just perfect for planting. So far I have just some brazillian pennywort in the tank but was planing to have more.I have a plant list but I was looking for some hints, placement, plants to include/not include. Do I need more mid ground plants?

Crypts- Willisi and Lucens. Even though they are low light if they are shaded a bit by jungle Vals do you think they will survive?

Xmas Moss
Rotala Michandra?
Baby TeaRs
Micro Sword (foreground/corners)
Lobelia
Glossostigma
Jungle Vals (to shade the crypts)

Include a small piece of gnarled african bogwood?

Fertilizer? Chemicals?
Eco Complete for the substrate.

Aquascape: Jungle vals in the corners and just a little around the back. I want to figure out a way for the pennywort to drape up the side and back also. Coming down behind the driftwood piece covered with Xmas moss? Foreground plants following?

Please, I welcome all hints, tips, pictures, everything. It will definately help me.

Thanks

Hmm well Rotala macranda is quite a delicate and demanding plant I have been incapable of growing it even in 6WPG and CO2. But give it a shot it's worth a try, since if you can get it to grow it is a gorgeous plant, though it may go pink or slightly greeny instead of the full blown red it is known for.

Jungle vals I can guarantee are almost to big for that tank, I have some in my 75G that's around 4' in length. But i guess you can keep it really trimmed down.

Some plants i wold suggest are:
Anubias nana var. 'petite'
Dwarf hairgrass could be a forground alternative if glosso doesn't work out, or if you want a different texture, since you ahve a lot of leafy plants.

I keep crypts in 6WPg with no problem, they grow lower but also much more colorful, so you don't have to shade them, of course shading them means they will graw taller as the leaves won't spread out real close to the substrate.

stem plants aren't very good when it comes to tank longevity since they keep growing and growing, and must be constantly trimmed. so You might want to consider some slower growing rooted plants to anchor the system down. Too many stem plants can really deplenish your energy and happiness with the tank.

O hope this helps somewhat, I'm sure one of the plant gurus will disagree with me in some places, but oh well.

HTH,
Megil

Well the tank currently after a small change of plans is begining to look like an aquascape. I placed a small piece of driftwood in the tank, which looks like a small sunken piece of log (on it side). Anubias Nana (petite) is stuck in the spaces in the wood. The Brazilian Pennywort is the back drop. I used Flourite brown for the substrate, its alittle murky right now but is quickly clearing up. I loove the Flourite already though, the color and size is great, it looks so natural! Easy to plant in too! I took pictures today, so they will be in the update eventually. I also have more plants coming this Friday which will definaltley fill out the aquascape.

I have more Brazilian Pennywort to finish the back wall. Some small form Lobelia and Micro Chain sword for the foreground. Reg. Anubias Nana and Crypt Walkeri for the mid ground. Rotala Ma. for some color, but from what I have heard its difficult to grow. We'll see Some Java moss, just in case.

Updates will follow. You guys I am just so freaking excited!!!!!

thetunnelfades,

Your tank sounds very exciting, I just wish you could show us some pictured of it.

Say, if you don’t mind, I am a little concerned about your plant selection for size reasons. What are the dimensions of your tank? You will spend quite a bit of time constantly trimming the Pennywort as it is a very fast grower (at least in my tank). Where are you planning to put the Macrandra? It needs very bright light (which you have) and doesn’t like any shade from other plants. In your tank that seems to be very hard to accomplish (limited depth with tall Pennywort).

What is your (planned) fertilization schedule and what do you use? Do you inject CO2 or add carbonates? If not, what is all the light for (as CO2 will be your limiting factor)?

I really think a picture would help the visualization process .

Have fun,

Ingo
