You should go to your favorite lfs and a big ol' chain store to see what plants are available unless you are willing to buy plants online. Most lfs have a very limited selection of aquatic plants. The upside is that they are normally very easy to keep successfully. The chain stores are different. Their selection is kinda random which means you can get a very good deal sometimes. Find some plants you like and look 'em up online or ask around here. Resist the urge to buy the plants right then and there. Some common plants: anubias sp., jave fern, java moss, amazon swords (Echinodorus sp.), Cryptocoryne sp., moneywort, pennywort, hornwort, Hygrophila polysperma (i forget the common name), Hygrophila difformis (i forget that one too), watersprite. If you want some scientific names on the ones where i just listed common names, just ask up and they shall be delivered unto you. [span class="edited"][Edited by hazywater 2004-09-07 19:26][/span] |

Avoid heavy root feeders like crypts and amazon swords. Do go for 'Bunch' plants. These are stem plants sold in large bunches. The -worts will do well, mostly. Hygrophilia sp and watersprite may also do well. Floating plants will do well. What else? Camboba is demanding so try to avoid that. Stay away from red plants except for the sunset version of hygrophilia polysperma. I'm making a lot of generalizations here and some of these plants i'm telling you to avoid may end up doing fine, but I think that in your case you may want to stick with tried and true no special care plants. |

princessinabsentia![]() Hobbyist Posts: 135 Kudos: 81 Votes: 0 Registered: 06-Aug-2004 ![]() ![]() | guess i'm the only one who does this but... i have about 2 wpg and i have everything from lotus to pennywort to ferns etc no co2 and white marble chips not even gravel and my platns grow like weeds. so just try anything you want and look at garden stores that sell pond equipment. you can find alot of platns there.... thats where i got my anacharis from and it is 18 inches long and VERY VERY prolific. dont forget the bulbs you can buy from walmart or petco either. thats where all my apon have come from and in less then 3 weeks they went from bulbs to plants about a foot tall so for $3.00 and a little patience you can get alot of plants for cheap.. they also see lilly bulbs. me |
