Hey people.

Ok, I've been having an algae problem for about two weeks now.

Well it started a few days after I added lots of plants and added some plant fertilizer. Well since then all the plants have died because algea has grown all over them.
I'm currently havng to do big cleans every 4 days to remove all the algae from the glass and substrate. The algae is like slime and it appears as layers over the substrate and all the rocks.

Does anyone know anything I can do to stop this? Help?
I've started by reducing light time. But what now?

ps, the algae smells.

Maybe you added alot of Fertilizer?. I had the same problem some time ago & i switched off the lights for a week & did a couple of water changes. I think i changed 25% of the water every 3 days.

If the algae smells it's probably BGA aka. cyanobacteria. BGA is usually related to NO3 (nitrate) bottoming out or in some cases poor tank maintenance and a lot of waste in the tank. Could you post more info about the tank, how much light you have, stocking, what you fertilize with, etc.? This will help us figure out how to get rid of the algae.

it's a 115g, stocked with african cichlids/the tank is understocked at the moment. I do weekly 20% water changes. It has 2 canister filters, combined total of 2500lph. I have 50/50 lighting (1 actinic + 1 coolwhite light)

I used azoo condensed fertilizer. Only used it once, stoped now.

I actually found a very informative link.

after reading that I've realised that i'm guilty of having left the lights on for too long . Aswell as possibly overfeeding at times.
