Ran out of food for my cories the other day, so I ran over to Petsmart and just happened upon their plant section... and since I needed plants... yeah. But I'm not sure what they are. The girl had less of a clue than I did (I'm think they're all crypts of some sort and she agreed enough to mark them as such ), so she wasn't much of a help...

Crypt balansae? Or something else?

The undersides of the leaves are sort of reddish purple.

The undersides are more of a reddish brown on this one.

Any ideas?

In any case, I think I got a good deal on it all... she only charged me for two plants, marked at 1.99 a piece. ...even including the snail eggs that I'm sure are on the plants. *goes to buy some alum*

Balanse, cardinallis, and wendtii, respectively.

Really? Never heard of cardinallis... same basic care as your average crypt? And the third one doesn't look like the wendtii I already have... Wait... wendetti? *goes searching for that one, too* Is that a spelling variation of wendtii or a completely different plant?

Uh, that would be a spelling error on my part. ;p

Anyhoo, lobelia cardinalis is an easy to care for plant with beautiful red coloration under high light--however, it's quite hardy and thrives even when floating--I use mine simply for nutrient absorption. It makes for a great aquascape.

Hehe... 'sokay. Still doesn't look like my wendtii, but I guess maybe it will when it matures? *shrugs*

As for the lobelia... bah... thought it was a crypt. I don't HAVE any high light tanks, except maybe the 20 gallon, which is more "medium" than high. *goes to research*

It's not neccesarily a high light tank. In fact, mine do great in both low and high light (15 watts, 20 gallons, you do the math ), you just won't keep that reddish tinge.

Lobelia cardinalis is only red or purple above water. Under water it turns green. The reason it is red when you buy it is because it is grown in a nursery above water. it will even grow as a terrestrial plant where it gets deep red and has blood red flowers.

Best regards
