Today I went to petco for birdfood, and since they were out of stock, I went to look at what they had to offer plantwise. I found aquatic plants in plastic tubes in a gel substrate. Anybody else seen these. I purchased three labeled echinorderus argentinensis argentine sword, selaginella wildenowii peacock fern, and dracaena variegatus gold ribbon. It says these are products of complete aquatic systems of Torrance, CA.

Wow thanks. I did a little research on the plants, and it appears the latter two plants aren't truly aquatic. Is this so?

Kankushok, you are right

selaginella wildenowii – is listed as a terrarium plant, one site even goes so far as to say that it is unsuited for aquariums

dracaena variegates – is listed as a semi-aquatic plant, or even as a potted plant outdoors, one site (same as above) even goes so far as to say that it is unsuited for aquariums

This basically means that they will survive for a while under water, but eventually die. Good that you did your research there.

HI,
yes i have seen and purchased several of those plants.
Unfortunately, out of all the one I have seen, only 2 were actually aquatic plants. The rest were all terrestrials.
The 3 I had "peace lily" spathithyllum (sp) and brazilian sword, and dracena, were all terrestrial plants and only lasted about 3 weeks in my aquarium.
I wouldnt bother with them, better off to go for
real plants.

Old thread... I took the time to go to the LFS and write down the plant names, then did some research. Of the thirteen plants I found sold at the LFS, a mere four were true aquatics. I haven't checked to see if there's any more varieties of the gel-packed plants, but then, lately all I've seen are very dried out, poor specimens. Poor plants.

Couldn't find much on the first plant, but from what I've seen it looks to be aquatic. Can anybody confirm that? Also, what should I do with the nonaquatic plants?

As far as I can tell the argentine sword is aquatic. Most of the sites I found weren't in english except 2 and one was by someone that didn't really know english. The first one gave information for keeping it in an aquarium and the 2nd also gave aquarium keeping info and said something about not being a suitable terrarium or pond plant. As for the nonaquatics well I stuck mine in a pot and gave it to my mom
