I have noticed some black splotches on one of my swords(dont know what species) in my 10 gallon. I added flourish excell and after that the spots appeared. Why did this happen and can I do anything to fix it?

Try a dosing schedule comprised of Iron and vitamin supplements.

Is it possible it's algae? Are the splodges raised at all ?

If it is algae it may because you added fertilizer when it wasn't need by the plants and so the algae used it.

If not try using a root tab fert for your sword rather then a liquid, which the sword won't really use as they are heavy root feeders.
