Hi all!

My gurlfriend's tank is brown! I suspect that she has brown algae. I was thinking of puttin some chemicals that gets rid of algae but to my past exp it seems to lower ph a lot. She currently has a 30gal goldfish tank with 3 goldfishes in there. There is no lighting in it, it just receives lighting from light source from house light. Is there another alternative to remove the algae?

So wait, is the water brown, or are the objects brown from algae? Goldfish are VERY dirty fish, and she needs to stay on top of water changes like, majorly.

Chemicals to get rid of algae tend to suck, this is because they destroy all traces of algae, leaving a nice blank canvas for it to invade on again. I suggest something to control the algae, like algae-eating snails or fish.

Goldfish do not belong in a 30 gallon tank. One goldfish doesn't belong in a 30 gallon, so three... Golfish are very messy fish that add a lot to the bio load. They are poop machines... Goldfish require at least a 55 gallon tank.

A tank without lighting shouldn't really produce that much algae, I suspect it's poor water quality. In that type of tank, you MUST keep up with your water changes and gravel vacs.

Could you please post the tank params? (ammonia, pH, nitrIte, nitrAte)
