My lfs got some of these in and they look very nice. Im currently running two 15watt 10,000k fluros with a co2 system. Just wondering if these conditions are fine for these guys.

Thanks

Well you didn't say what size tank you have, but they should be fine. Very easy plant doesn't need much of anything will even do well in low light.

With all crypts it may shed some leaves at first and may take some time to acclimate and start growing but just leave it be and it will do fine.

A trick that falstaf mentions for crypts is to rinse them carefully in running water as the leaves produce a chemical that is to help prevent it from being eaten, in our tanks it ends up causing them to "melt".
Also take a razor blade and carefully (ask for help where appropriate of course) cut the tips of the roots off. This will help stimulate further root growth.

Hi,

It's the roots that produce the chemical

When moved, these substance stays "still" in the substrate causing the roots to auto-absorb it and then comes the leave melt. if you rinse well and give the plant some time to produce the substance (20 min) and rinse it again, then when planted, there will be no chemical present and the plant won't melt. They do these in self defence in order to kill any other root that will compete with them for nutrients.

Even if they melt, don't worry, they will grow again, that's the wonderful thing about crypts.

OO thanks for that clarification Falstaf ...chemical warfare it sounds like to me!
I'd simply rinsed mine for a few moments under the tap, I suppose the hour trip back from the LFS gave it enough time to produce it's chemical
Cutting of roots is something I know from terrestrial plants, especially those that have become root bound, I've done it for my crypts, can't say if it's helped or hurt, all I know is the only one I had melt on me was one tiny one that was left to float for a few weeks because I was too busy to actually plant plant it .

Like all the wendtii crypts they are pretty easy to grow. I have bronze, brown, and green in my tanks. They grow fine under low light or high light as far as I can tell. I have some under as low as 1wpg and others with 4wpg and co2. Not all that fast growing but not the slowest thing I have either. The brown and bronze seem to grow a bit taller and the green a bit flatter for some reason but they've all worked great for planting around caves in my community tanks.

Thanks for all the help

I've been thinking of purchasing one of these plants to place in my 18inch tank. It now full of anubias but trying to convert it into a full planted tank.

The tank's inhabitants could be found in my Website(http://Mango4Jade.cjb.net) under Catfish Tank in the left handed menu.

But, this tank doesnt have co2 so I am worried about the plants.
