This type keeps poping up in my planted 10 gal. Likes to cover the gravel, and some of my plants if given the chance, especially my Water Wisteria "Hygrophila difformis".

My tank has been cycled for about 2 weeks now. No CO2. or fertilizers (Thinking of adding Sera's 'Florena'), 3 WPG of fluorescent lights, on for 10 hours a day. Water change and gravel vacuum of 25% every 7-10 days. No overfeeding.

Could anyone ID this algae for me please? And maybe any ideas as to why I have it growing? Thanks much.

Three dreaded letters: B-G-A.

It's blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria. You can tell by the tell-tale bubbling, and the slimy appearance. It usually occurs in planted tanks with low nitrates, and you can remove it manually to your heart's content, but it'll keep coming back until conditions in the tank change as to limit its growth. It also can't help that you've got 3WPG without adding CO2. That's just asking for trouble.

There are a bunch of threads - here's one - that give ways of treating it and preventing its return.

bala shark:

To me, it looks like brown algae. Tyically brown fluffy stuff.
It's very common in new tanks. It's easy to remove, and once your tank matures, disappears completely.
I always hate to point to another website, but rather than rehash what's already been written (and being a guy, which makes me naturally lazy anyway), here's a link.

That's definately not brown algae....

Looks just like the BGA I had...color, bubbles, and all

Good luck, you'll need it!

I did a very fine cleaning of all plants covered, and a 30% water change/gravel vacuum right after. Hopefully it will go away with time so long as I keep up with the maintenance. Thanks everyone
