Strangly enough when I took the guy out of the bag he had a shoot out the side that couldn't possibly have occured if he had grown it while @the shop, it was sending the leaves up @the wrong angle .
He's had his leaves washed under running tap water, and is now planted (the danios of course took the opertunity of my arm being in the tank to nibble air bubbles off my arm :%) in hopefully a bright enough spot next to the red temple plant. Finally noticed that my wisteria seems to be making a comeback, well one of them is anyway .

T'anks Falstaf I'll do that ASAP when I get home tonight....didn't realize that temperture changes would effect plants. I guess they're just as bad as fish then .

Hi Babel,

Keeping them in plastic bags, not only crypts but any plant is not a good idea, plastic is very temperature unstable, and can make your plants rot, is you saw snails in their tanks, just take it out from the little pot (if they came in one), and wash them thoroughly under tap water making sure that you wash each leave front and back very well with your finger tips also the roots, that will take care of the snail eggs.

Its also a good idea to trim all the roots like 1/3 of the size that they come with, this will trigger the plants survival mode and will start growing right away. Crypts grow really long root structures so it will be in an effort to develop this in your tank. Be also sure not to leave any root exposed, they really dont like this, they wont melt, but they will take longer to start growing.

Wow go to the aquaruim and you get your threads hijacked .

Well I added a few pennies to the bag it's still in (yes I'm sure it's not good for it to be in the bag for so long ) hopefully that'll get rid of any snails (they had pond snails in their planted tanks ].< ) I'll leave them in for a few days then plan on planting it.. Should I rinse it off in tap water daily till it goes in the tank ?

^_^

Okay just got one, silly question really, but is this the plant everyone refers to when they say their crypt is melting. If so, how does it happen and why and what do I do about it.

T'anks in advance .

I've got some young'uns too Megil! Phil is 'Cryptmaster Phil', so maybe his crypts don't need to defend themselves! LOL! (although my Retrospiralis didn't come from him).

thats right it is called cryptocoryne disease and some crypts are more e to it then others. great input kitty . i jsut figured it was called crypt. disease b/c almost all crypts are susceptible to melting ^ ^ who would have thoguht its was a chemical response

I got some great info from Falstaf when I was asking about reaquascaping my tank and the crypt wendtii I was afraid to move:
LOL don't be afraid of your crypt! what you describe as melting is actually called cryptocoryne disease, it's caused by a secretion of a poison in self defense, so it's like suicide, to avoid this, and be able to move them around, take them out of the tank, soak them in tap water for about 20 minutes then rinse in tap and back they go, that tricks them into thinking they are defending themselves and they run out of that substance so when they are planted again they don't secretes it anymore

I moved my crypt according to his directions and haven't had a problem with my crypt since. The reaquascaping was finished on 6/24 and it's now three weeks later with only one single melted leaf, which had started melting before I read his advice. Last time the crypt was moved, I lost nearly half the plant to melt. I'm impressed and happy, since I intend to plant a small tank with mostly crypts in the near future. VERY good advice to have!

By the way, I LOVE my crypt. I wasn't too sure about it when I got it, but it has developed into a lovely, bushy plant. It now has some great patterning in the leaves (red-brown coloration through the green) and is one of my favorite plants. However, if you have a small tank (like my ten gallon), make sure you don't plant it in the front corner like I did when I got it... you won't be able to see the tank behind it!
