Hello !

I unfortunatelty have to move all my plants into a bare tank for a couple days. These plants were just starting to stabilize in the tank..

Is there anything I can do to help prevent cryt melt, again ?

types
(x willisii, ballansae, undulata, wendtii, unknown)

Thanks for any tips,
DaFish

I think it depends on the severity of the move. If you pulled all the plants out of the substrate and put them in different water conditions and substrate - or even a drastically different spot in the substrate - then there's not much you can do. I've moved my crypts around in the same tank without them melting by just kind of "dragging" the plant along with the same bits of gravel around it.. never exposing the roots or removing it from the substrate. Crypt melt just seems to be a fact of life.

"Cryptocoryne disease" happens when the plants are moved from one tank to another and the leaves cannot adapt to the new water right away. They are sensitive to changes in water parameters, and it's not uncommon for all the leaves to "melt".

But the plant is not dead - do not remove it. The roots are still alive and well, and if you leave the plant in there for a couple weeks, it will sprout new leaves and be healthy. That is one of the biggest plant-newbie mistake, throwing out a crypt because it's leaves melted away.

Yes there is.

Lets see if I remember it .

It's a mild toxin that is used by the plant to protect itself ...if I remember correctly :%).

Wash the new plants off in fresh tap water for a few moments and rub the leaves gently.

Then carefully trim the roots with a razor or knife. This is used often with terrestrial plants as well to force new roots to grow.

Trim away and remove the damaged leaves as babel said, and dont change ANYTHING about the setup. I changed my 7 month old Aquaglo to a new Aquaglo, and they all went to jelly

I still have them, even after 2 months in a chinese food container

Thanks for your quick responses.

The plants will go into a holding tank for a day or 2, using the existing tankwater, so nothing will change 'environment wise' except for being pulled from their substrate, temp will be the same.

Should they still be rinsed and rubbed under the tap ?
If so, same temp water ? Colder ?

Additionally, the flourite will go into a 10 gal bucket with water and an airstone, and will not be rinsed, to keep the bacteria alive and any nutrients intact.
Sound ok ?

I moved all my crypts including a huge motherplant and several babies from my mom's house to the apartment with no problems. They didn't even get put in the same substrate, water, or light conditions and I had no melt. I dug them out of the orginal tank, rinsed them, bagged them with plenty of water, rinsed again when we got to the apartment, and added them to the new tank. I also didn't have them melt when I got them from the lfs and shipped to me from azgardens. I just rinsed as soon as I got home and added them to the tank. My mom's house doesn't have chlorine it's well water so I just used cold tap water.

Gang,

An additional piece of information to all the correct ones before:

The various kinds of Crypts don’t all react the same way to changes. Some have a much larger tendency to melt than others (sorry, too lazy right now to read through 60 pages in my plant book to find an example).

Melting might occur if the Crypt barely managed to get settled in one tank and is moved to another with the same conditions.

In addition, what works for one person might not work for another. If ones parameters (ph, hardness, light) are different from the others, adaptation might be easier (for example if ones hardness is good for the Crypt or just borderline).

Ingo

When I removed them from the tank, I gave the crypts a rinse.. Now half in a goldfish bowl, the other half in the holding tank.. The roots looked great, nice and healthy.

I will rinse again before re-planting. Thanks all !

The tank holds water now and has been running all night with a 50% water change to boot. Caves are in too.

Time for the moment of truth, and re-plant.
I've been putting it off, think Planting Anxiety ? YES
Nervous. Don't know why.. Debating, same look as before or different, maybe SLIGHTLY different.

Regular java moss out, my pinch of taiwan going in.

Will trim crypt roots then rinse before replanting the crypts as per BabelFish. (Thanks Dabel)

This is slow going, keep getting sidetracked by e-mails, coffee, smoke breaks... Planting in small bunches at a time, 40% of tank planted now.

All the swords are in (8), plus 2 e tenellus... Tank is looking different then before, cool. The right section of the tank is now called 'Echinodorus Alley'.

Time for the next planting section.
