I am starting up my first planted tank and i have a few questions:
1. Before putting plants into the tank do you have to cycle before planting, or after, or do the plants cycle the tank?

2.what would be a plant I can usse as a background instead of vals?, my tank is only 40cm

3 Do i need to use ferts?

thanks in advance

1 is generally dependant on how planted you are making the tank. If you plant front to back plants all over the place and stock slow you don't have to cycle the tank first.

2 and 3 are dependant on quantity of plants, lighting situation, CO2 addition...etc. If you clue us in on your whole setup then we can give you better advice.

i am going to use DIY CO2, i dont have lights yet but will probably have around 2-3 watts per gallon.
The tank is a 16gal cube with 40cm sides.

I plan to plant all but the front left quater.

Are there plants that, once planted, will cover the floor of the tank? the plant must be short

Yes, it would, but why?

I would suggest that you take your time before you set up this tank. In that time you should enjoy the learnings about plants and their needs, about plant options, and everything else that comes to mind with planted tanks. It is fun to dig into this topic and you will be glad to have spent the time first before you make mistakes.
