Mrwizerd,

I know how that feels; I ended up with only rock in my big tank.

All online sources that I found didn’t seem to show you the real item that you would purchase or the items displayed were not to my likings.

Another option would be to look in rivers, streams, and lakes for wood that has been submersed in the water for a long time (someone suggested 3 years). If you should happen to find a piece that you like and that has been under for a long time then you should carefully clean it before using it. The last debate here regarding driftwood that I read was about “Is boiling Driftwood Good or Bad?”, so I will stay out of making a recommendation either way.

As LF said, most online stores that sell driftwood show "sample" pieces, so you never know what you're going to get... and then what the's point of that?

I've had lots of success using the greatest single resource for random things ever: EBAY!

It actually looks like there are some nice mopani wood pieces up for grabs now. Good luck!

i have to caution against using wood that you pick up out of rivers and lakes. having come from an area with high water pollution, it's not a good idea to put that kind of thing in your tank

I use GRape wood that's been sand blasted(it should be rock hard and sink after a couple of days).
I use Redwood stumps/roots
I use Oak(Live Oak, Q agrifolia and lobata(Valley Oak), Also CA Bay, Madrone oak, Manzanita is also quite good for branchy pieces.

In the south, Cypress and water oak are excellent, but Southern swamp Cedar is even better if not one of the best of woods(Very pretty grain and color). Some eastern hardwoods are nice, most get rotted too fast though.

There are better woods in the drier and apline areas and a few riparian areas.

Tom Barr

Around here we do have oak, but the streams here seem to be seasonal so old driftwood is out of the picture, however the water here is clean, it is actually really pure out of the tap which is straight from the wells with no clorine added belive it or not. The water in the streams may be more poluted however since they run thru the city above ground. I could probably find some oak and some grape around her, or even walnut would be really easy but not sure it is ok to use. I searched briefly on ebay and found stuff that was connected to tiles wasnt sure if this was aquarium safe so i passed, whats the verdict on the stuff with tile bases?
