I'm working on my 30g, and have just received my shipment of new plants including giant hygro. The roots are not established yet, and my substrate is 100% gravel. What are the best choices of fertilizer tabs to give the roots a boost?

SeaChem makes good plant tabs.
Smaller grain sizes, 2-3mm diameter is ideal form plants rather than large gravel.

Fertilizers aren't chemicals. They are natural compounds found in the dirt in your yard to the nearest river or pond. In nature they are constantly generated by living organisms as waste or something dying. In a closed system these compounds might be lacking. Gravel is not a natural growing medium for most plants and often requires the addition of fertilizers to make it suitable. Then again if you are buying plants without roots you are probably getting plants that don't feed mostly from their root system but instead draw nutrients from the water.
