mmm... cycling...

i think mostly people recomend running your viv for a month or so mostly so you have time to iron out all the bugs in the viv. mostly so that you aren't tearing out false bottoms and redoing plumbing in an inhabitated viv.

that said, frogs poop. and poop as we all know breaks down into toxic materials. whether ammonia and nitrogenous wastes are toxic to frogs i'm not sure, but i do know that frogs are extremely sensitive, and toxins in the water can osmose through their skin.

the water here is extremely soft but quite alkaline. almost no kh/gh but the ph is like 8.6-9 I'm sure that with the low buffering capacity, having the water constantly run over coco-fiber will probably lower the ph pretty well. i definately can't afford an RO system right now anyway.

Yeah, I was wondering if you knew something I didn't about the nitrogoenous wastes vs. frog interaction. From what I've seen, most people don't do water changes unless it starts to smell bad, we aquarists know that's MUCH too late if we're concerned about wastes building up.

I don't know off the top of my head what those items run for or if we even have an 18X24 UGF. I work Sunday so I'll let you know. I want to say I think the dual 65w coralifes run $150 or so, but I'm probably off by a bit.
