This topic was originally started by Tetratech, but i couldn't find it so i decided to continue it here.

I've been usung Fluorish excel to combat a severe algae problem in a 4G tank with really high lighting, no CO2, i tried everything with no noticable improvement. here is a photo of the first week after using it, the green thread algae that covered all the plants turned reddish.

That's quite the mistype!

I guess all I can say is wow as well, and a couple questions...How much were you dosing and how often? Also, was there anything else that was different that you did?

Congrats on the clear up....nice looking tank now!/:'

that's what happens when you type fast, late at night and after a really long day at work.

I'm dosing 1ml daily as instructed in the label, and no, nothing different, weekly water change of 100% and 5ml. after each water change as also instructed in the label, I guess that now that I'm making the math, the 5ml. is a double dose since the label says for each 40 liters, and these tank is only 20.

You can also see the plant growth, which is amazing, good stuff!

Did your fish seem affected?

1 mL? I thought that was the amount for 10 or 20 gallons?

I know some people were overdosing without adverse effects on their fish, but some of mine flick against objects when I dose it. .

I've never had a problem using excel at even double the dose with panda cory, congo tetras, otos, plecos, gourami, black neons, rams, angelfish, and yoyo loaches. Not one has flicked after adding it or flicked at all that i've seen.

Seachem themselves have noted that the Excel seems to have a mysterious effect on hair/thread algae. The turning red and dying off seems to be quite common. They don't seem to know why, seems to be just a lucky side effect. Or maybe they do know but just don't want to say !?

No Di, I haven't noticed any strange behavior or flicking at all, all the fish seem happy.

As for the stock:
1 snail
2 ottos
1 betta
4 tiny mysterious shrimp
and a baby rubber mouth pleco who's there, just growing once he's a little bit bigger he will go into the community tank, he's less than an inch.

I don't know why some of my fish flick even with the smallest amount of Excel added. I have thread algae in my tank and wanted to use it to get rid of it after reading aobut it in a thread at Aquatic Plant Central. I upped the dosing and always 1-3 fish just go crazy within 15 minutes and rub for hours. It took me time to track down what was causing it.

Could it be something doing a reaction, like your water conditioner + fluorish, or maybe melafix? It is strange that they are flicking, maybe your bottle of fluorish was a wrong batch, have you tried getting a new one?

A while backi decided not to use any aditive on the water conditioner, like stress coat or aloe or anything, first my tanks would get dirty faster, i found that on the betta bowls, second, my fish didn't seem to need or use it, in fact some times i could see them like "high" from it. Third, melafix did made mine flick and gasp for air, even a small dose.

Since i switched to common unexpensive btw, dechlorinating solution, i'm very happy and my fish as well.
