![]() | Good plants to start with |
highjinx![]() Hobbyist Posts: 108 Kudos: 96 Votes: 2 Registered: 16-Jul-2004 ![]() ![]() | I recently set up my tank about 2 or 3 weeks ago and have planted it with walmart bulbs (lilly bulbs and hybrid aponogeton bulbs). what r some good plants to put in to help the cycle along so that i can have a clean and safe tank sooner? I preferr bulbs because they can plant themselves and i don't have to stress my fish trying to plant more plants. |

If it's the former I don't think there are any that will speed up a cycle. For the latter it's best to start with fast growing low demand plants first rather then bulbs. Fast growing plants will suck the nitrates and phosphates quicker and can stop algae from getting a hold in your tank and will stabilize the tank and later you can add more difficult or slower growing plants. Also the last thing you need now is a plant dying in your tank and polluting the water. What plants you can grow will demand on how much light you have. But some excellent starter plants are Hygrophilia Polysperma, Wisteria, Water Sprite, Egeria Densa or Hornwort. If these plants came with instructions it would probably read "just add water" ! Don't worry if the look of these plants doesn't appeal to you , you can take them out later if you want. Don't use any ferts. No need to worry about aquascaping yet just get them in and let them do their thing, once they are settled you can move them about and add slower growing or more demanding plants and build up your aquascape. Don't worry about planting or moving plants stressing fish, it doesn't bother them that much and the improved environment they get as result of having live healthy plants in the tank more then makes up for it.
