I have had so many problems keeping up with the algae in this tank, and it seems the problem keeps getting worse. I thought this was just a normal thing that planted tanks do, until I set up my new 10g planted. I have attempted to stock Ottos, but the poor things seem to have a short life span in that tank. When they are active,t hey seem to only want the little algae on the glass, not on the driftwood, the plants, the gravel..... I have completely cut out all ferts, do many water changes, and nothing helps. I would like to add a fast growing plant, but the tank is almost full of Javas (I had only two to start off with, and babies kept coming). Should I attempt to add a pleco in the tank along with my three tetras? They seem to be doing a heck of a job on the new tank. |

They can be delicate (see Calileisseia's great article for details) but once you get them established they are excellent algae-eaters. Algae on glass is relatively easy to scrape off manually, then the ottos can concentrate on the plants and wood. ![]() |
