Well I thought I was past this, but I'm starting to get thread algae again.

I'm not sure why, my co2 is up to about 18 mg/l.
Could it be my nitrates are too low. I do weekly water changes and add some ferts and kno3 during each change. I'm only adding about 1/4 tsp of kno3, maybe not enough.

Also I decreased the density of my plants alittle, because my large schools of tetras look much better with more black showing in the background. Any advise.

You should know how much nitrate is in your tank if you are adding kno3 - you shouldn't just blindly add it. I would get a nitrate test and make sure it is around 10-20ppm. It is pretty easy to overdose that stuff if you remove some plants and aren't testing for it. If your algae came back after you removed the plants, I would say that extra nitrates due to less plants could be the problem if that is the only thing you have changed.

Thanks for the info. I have a nitrate test kit, but I think there is something wrong with it, because it always shows zero. I've been adding about 1/2 tsp per weekly water change.

If you think your nitrate test is bum, you could go to the lfs and see if they will test your water just in case. Most lfs's will do that for you. That way you know for sure if your test works.
