I'm changing over my 29g to a convict tank for my step-son. I'd really like to have a few live plants in the tank but I've had bad luck with cichlids treating plants as lunch in the past.

Any suggestions on some cicld-hardy plants for a tank less than 1 wpg?

Thanks

The only thing I can think of surviving is anubias, java fern, and java moss. I've had crypt wendtii and becketti (sp?)?? in a paludarium setup with very little light and it thrived too, except you'd need to let them settle in and put some stones around the base or the convicts would dig em up.

Is there a way that one can put a protector around the root system?

Wish-ga's Curiosity Show segment...
Maybe cut away a single cup from the clear plastic egg cartons the eggies come in. Cut a hole in it so the roots can hang down under the cup and bury the whole thing.

The fish will dig around the root area but once through the gravel it will hit the barrier and not dislodge the roots.... that said and done most eggs come in recyclable cardboard cartons in my part of the world.
