High flow rate promotes algae? | |
mughal113 Big Fish Posts: 343 Kudos: 160 Votes: 64 Registered: 16-Jun-2006 | Hi, I have a weird observation. I have noticed much more algae growth in areas of high water flow than those with a lower current. I had some plants that received a direct current from the filter output and they always had the largest amount of algae in the tank. I fitted a spray bar at the end of the outlet to diffuse the current and have noticed a significant improvement. Just wanted to know if this happens to you all. -Mughal |

I'm not totally sure, but I believe it's due to circulating more nutrients in that area. Since the nutrients are carried in the water, more water flow = more nutrients. Thus it makes the nearby surrounding surfaces a better area for algae to host upon. Not sure if this is entirely correct or other reasons, but it seems reasonable to me. |

To further support the hypothesis, I have a wysteria that has some of the leaves right in front of the outflow and the others are out of the way. Those receiving direct flow have algae on them while the others are perfectly clean! |
