I'm setting up another 120g (4x2x2) and am up in the air about lighting. I may purchase a Coralife 2x65w 48 fixture above the tank. Anyway, I'm looking for a good plant to fill the background. Vals look very nice when they grow and fill in. How do they do in 1-1.5wpg setups?

They may grow, but IME need 2ish wpg to do well. You can always run with a nice hardscape and java ferns, java moss, and there are many anubias like gigantea that grow very tall on thier own. I pointed you out to tropica in the other thread, you can look for low light plants there under advanced search.

Mike,

Why not get the 4x65W unit? The tank is of a nice shape and rather deep, and you will get sick of the Vals soon anyway. That is, of course, if you are really into planted tanks by now and not just another temporary fluke, then it would be a waste of money.

The tank won't be planted by any means. I just want some plants to fill the background and some areas of the foreground. Monster fish will still be the focus of the tank.

Monster fish and plants don't mix Except if you maybe have some cement to affix a thick fake plastic plant to the bottom of the tank. Larger fish tend to either eat the plants or to rearrange them in the tank if they don't like the current spot that they occupy, and then they do it all over again.

Except javas and Anubias, which don't need rooting in the substrate anyway. Stick with them, it'll save aggravation.

EDIT: My apologies, I did something I hate doing - replied but didn't answer the question. I think yes, they will live and grow - slowly - in 1WPG. Without CO2 and more light IME they'll grow rather brittle and not as nicely as they can. So yes, they will grow, but if you want a taller long leaved plant for those conditions I think some large java ferns would work better.

Back in the saddle!
