I'm curious how long FP members have been using their bulbs on their planted tanks. Please select one of the choices and tell us if you have seen any affects on the plants from using old bulbs or when you replace with new bulbs.

That's a bit hard to vote. The regular fluorescent fixture probably needs the first bulb replaced because it was the first fixture I put on a planted tank over a year ago. In that time I only replaced the back bulb for a different spectrum. The 2 bulbs in the compact fluorescent fixture are close to a year and the other 2 less than a month but compact fluorescents don't degrade like regular bulbs so I don't plan to replace them until they go out.

My current bulbs are about four months old. I replace them once a year.

About one year I think I've had the current set.

Depends on the type of bulb being used. Normal flourescents will dim and probably should be changed every 6 months or so. Power compacts are more stable and can probably go 'til they burn out. I tend to change them every year or so so I don't get caught out with a bulb dying and no replacement.
If the bulb is still working when I change it out I keep it for back up, never know when a power surge or something might unexpectantly blow a bulb, nice to have a replacement always on hand, as you recently found out

6-9 months

I replace my AquaGlos every 6 months on average.

I change my compact fluorescents out once a year.. not because I have to but because I'm bored with the coloration and want to try something different usually. I always save the old, yet not blown bulbs.
