Gang,

I added some Xmas Moss to my 29G a few months ago (read details [link=Here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Aquascaping/61406.html" style="COLOR: #ff6633[/link]).

I think the moss is just awesome, but it reaches a size now that I wonder if, and how, I should trim it.

Do you simply go and cut off the parts that hang over the sides of the base that it is fixed on? And for the top, do you simply cut it shorter, just like you would with a lawn?

Or is there a special technique?

Thank you for your help,

Ingo

Just hit it with the clippers as you would a hedge. Then, take what clippings you have, add them to a HOB container, allowing them to grow a bit before reattaching them. I'm going non CO2 at 1.5 wpg, so my xmas tends to grow a bit more height-wise, though, nonetheless, it should be trimmed in said fashion.

Very nice, Ingo. Look's great.

That little piece of moss you got turnened into a beauty

Just give it a good haircut with the scissors. If you remove the rock/wood it's attached to and do this trimming in a bucket of water even better. It'll avoid having little pieces of mosses floating off all over the tank, and stickng and growing where you don't want it.

If you have to do in tank, have a net ready to fish out the loose pieces.

Thanks Cup_of_Lifenoodles, Bensaf, and DaFishMan

Cup – This is also a non CO2 setup, but with about 2.25wpg and the moss is rather close to the light source.

Good ideas about the growing out before re-attaching and cutting in a bucket, somehow I would have missed these points.

The front part of the moss is hanging over with a length of at least 3 inches. These pieces will be added directly into the 125 as my moss there needs a support team to manifest itself .

Ashes – I think this is also answering your question about shipping some of it to you (which I would have no problem with). At this time I need it myself in another tank so the next chance would be maybe in a few months.

Thanks again,

Ingo

LF, that moss is really amazing. I have kept java moss in a 1 wpg tank no co2 and it grows great, but in my co2 highlight tank it doesn't do anything. I have some theories why this is happening, but not sure.

Thanks Cup_of_Lifenoodles and tetratech,

tetratech - what are your theories? Maybe we can dig in and find out what is going on (with other peoples help).

I can't grow java moss. I have xmas moss, weeping moss, and tawain moss that are atleast surviving and most are showing some growth but I've killed dozens of clumps of java moss especially in my highlight co2 tanks.

Sham,
That is very unusual ! My regular java moss has taken over the 10g but it is being phased out when I swap it for the 15. One screw in 11 watt flourescent bulb lights only the right side, nothing added, temp 76F.

DaFishMan,

the glass thermometer says 78F. I rememeber that in the beginning when I got the moss it was between 80 and 82, it was a hot summer here. It is 78 only since maybe 5 weeks.

ashes,

BTW, Xmas moss is not all that expensive when you but it online (if you can find it). The shipping would be the same, so maybe it is worth looking for it rather than waiting an undefined time period when you may or may not get some from me.
